ESEC Receives USDA Grant to Create Resilient Regional Food System

December 2, 2021 by Spy Desk

Share

The Eastern Shore Entrepreneurship Center (ESEC) has received a $105,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to plan and develop an implementation strategy for a regional Farm to Freezer value-chain coordination program in partnership with the Chesapeake Culinary Center (CCC).

The partnership combines each organization’s expertise to develop a more resilient and sustainable food system. ESEC is a leading provider of entrepreneurial technical assistance and programs that enable the commercialization of innovations and technologies in the agriculture sector. CCC is the region’s guiding force in operating a community kitchen, processing local produce, and making pre-prepared meals available to populations with limited food access.

The Farm to Freezer program will be designed to:

–        Extend the rural region’s growing season by preserving fresh fruits and vegetables at a new facility using advanced IQF technology that retains the fresh-grade nutrition levels.

–        Increase local market revenues for local rural farmers and growers to scale their production by providing a 12-month guaranteed purchase order for produce.

–        Expand access to local, nutritious food throughout the year for residents of Maryland’s Eastern Shore by extending the accessible season to local produce through the advanced processing and distribution system.

–        Set an example for other regional parts of Maryland to improve their food systems by replicating and adapting their own Farm to Freezer programs.

“We value our growing partnership with the Chesapeake Culinary Center and thank the USDA for supporting this project and its contribution to ESEC’s mission of solving regional problems through innovation and technology,” said Mike Thielke, executive director of ESEC.

The USDA funding is made possible through a grant program administered by the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) as part of the Local Agriculture Marketing Program (LAMP): the Regional Food System Partnerships (RFSP). In total, RSFP awarded $14.8 million to 30 projects across 24 states to support partnerships that connect public and private resources to plan and develop local or regional food systems.

“The new Regional Food System Partnerships grants will help build a fairer, more transparent food system rooted in local and regional production where businesses can compete fairly, because a greater share of the profit will go to those growing, harvesting, and preparing our food,” stated Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in a USDA press release.

About ESEC:

Eastern Shore Entrepreneurship Center (ESEC_ is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created in 2004 to help advance an entrepreneurship ecosystem on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. ESEC’s initiatives include the Chesapeake Agricultural Innovation Center (CAIC), CyberAg Symposium, F3 Tech, and hotDesks co-working. The programs encourage the organic development of high-growth, innovative, and scalable businesses and the jobs they create, with an emphasis on the region’s traditional industries of agriculture and seafood.

The Kent County Chamber of Commerce successfully hosted BrewFest on Saturday, November 6 in downtown Chestertown. The event featured 20 craft beers from Delmarva’s favorite breweries, live music from band Bravenoise, and food from Aretha’s Creative Touch. The event was a fundraiser for the organization.

“You couldn’t have asked for better weather, better beer, or better music—I’m thrilled with how the event came together,” said Sam Shoge, executive director of the Kent County Chamber of Commerce.

Volunteer Ben Ford serves attendee craft beer sample.

The event was made possible by the generous contribution from the event’s lead sponsor— Eastern Shore Tents and Events. “The Kent Chamber is extremely grateful for Eastern Shore Tents and Events’ sponsorship, we couldn’t have pulled this event off without them,” said Sam Shoge.

Additional support came from live music sponsor KVN Partners, sampling glass sponsor Cross Street Realtors, food truck sponsors The Peoples Bank and Fleetwood Insurance Group, and supporting sponsors Chesapeake Bank and Talkie Communications.

A merry group of volunteers including Kent Chamber board members, were on hand serving up good beer and good times to the 200+ attendees. Breweries featured at the event, thanks to Easton, MD-based Kelly Distributors, included Big Truck, Eastern Shore Brewing, Fordham & Dominion, RAR, Evolution, Cult Classic, Ten Eyck, Blue Earl, Mispillion, and Victory.

F3 Tech Portfolio Company Holganix Among Winners of USDA and EPA Next Gen Fertilizer Innovations Challenge

October 29, 2021 by Spy Desk

Share

Holganix, a 2021 F3 Tech Accelerator portfolio company, is among the winners of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Next Gen Fertilizer Innovations Challenge. The challenge is part of a USDA-EPA partnership to advance agricultural sustainability in the U.S. and recognize technologies that improve the efficiency of fertilizers to increase crop yields while reducing the impacts of fertilizers on the environment.

Holganixwas awarded for its Bio 800+ product, a microbial inoculant that harnesses the power of over 800 species of soil microbes and other soil amending ingredients to promote greater crop production and plant health. The company is one of five F3 Tech accelerator companies from the fields of crop and soil health, as well as clean energy storage.

“We are thrilled to receive this national recognition,” said Barrett Ersek, CEO and founder of Aston, PA-based Holganix. “Our plant probiotics are created to nurture plants from the soil up and are teeming with microorganisms to build healthier plants with less fertilizer and pesticide inputs needed. Our goal is to nurture the healthiest plant possible while being good stewards to the land.”

According to a joint press release from the USDA and EPA, the winning concepts include a range of solutions that can improve environmental outcomes, including reduced nitrous oxide emissions—the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture— while maintaining or increasing crop yields.

“Farmers, ranchers, and foresters are well-positioned to be leaders in tackling climate change through technological innovation,” said Acting USDA Chief Scientist Hubert Hamer. “Through programs like the Next Gen Fertilizer Innovations Challenge, USDA is partnering with the private sector to find new climate-smart solutions that are good for farmers and good for the environment.”

“The goal of the challenge is to develop and use innovative and affordable technologies to reduce environmental impacts of modern agriculture on our air, land, and water, while maintaining agricultural productivity and profitability,” said Wayne Cascio, acting principal deputy assistant administrator for science for EPA’s Office of Research and Development. “We are excited about the possibilities and continued new work in this area.”

USRC and Regional Partners Announce Oyster Harvest Rotational Pilot Program

October 28, 2021 by Spy Desk

Share

The Upper Shore Regional Council (USRC), in partnership with the Kent County and Queen Anne’s County Oyster Committees and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), is pleased to announce its Oyster Harvest Rotational Pilot Program. Bolstering the economic and ecological sustainability of the region, approximately 14 million oyster spat (oyster larvae) have been planted in a 4.5-acre section of water in the region. The initiative aims to create a self-sustaining oyster program to benefit commercial watermen and the aquatic ecosystem.

Commercial fishing is a $5 million dollar annual industry sector along Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Given its importance to the region, Jason Ruth, co-owner of Harris Seafood Co., who assisted with design and planting, hopes the project will generate revenues for watermen and pride in the waters that sustain them.

“The USRC project will help advance a new process for watermen to take a greater responsibility in maintaining a biomass of oysters while being able to be financially stable at the same time,” Ruth observed.

Funds generated from the first spat will fund the next set of spat plantings, eventually resulting in a self-sustaining oyster population. In recent decades, oyster populations have declined, due to overharvesting, pollution, and disease. As habitats for fish and crabs, oyster reefs provide nourishment and natural protection from predators. By creating new harvests and reefs, the program will restore the vitality of the ecosystem.

Christopher Judy, Director of the Shellfish Division for the Maryland DNR, emphasizes the project’s benefit to local waters. “There is a definite impact for both the Chester River and the local oystermen,” he noted. “The oysters planted on Coopers Hill will grow and enhance the oyster bar community of fish and a variety of invertebrates—worms, mud crabs, and shrimp included.”

This collaboration between state, regional, county, and commercial partners strives to make the oyster industry strong and habitats healthy.

“This partnership brings together expertise and resources for the benefit of our waters—and our watermen,” said Susan O’Neill, Executive Director of  USRC. “When we combine efficiencies and ideas, we can solve regional challenges.”

Christopher Judy agreed. “The project is an example for others, showing how groups can work together to develop projects with both ecological and economic benefits. It doesn’t have to be a situation of ‘either/or,’ or ‘my way or the highway.’ It can be a team effort with diverse benefits.”

For updates on the Oyster Harvest Pilot Program, please visit the USRC website.

Hub Group Expands its Supply Chain Solutions through the Acquisition of Choptank Transport

October 22, 2021 by Spy Desk

Share

Hub Group (Nasdaq: HUBG) announced today that it acquired Choptank Transport, Inc. (“Choptank”), an industry-leading provider of non-asset refrigerated transportation solutions. Since its founding in 2000, Choptank has achieved one of the fastest growth rates in the industry with its expansive network of over 20,000 carriers throughout North America, specializing in chilled and frozen solutions. The acquisition bolsters Hub Group’s presence in the refrigerated transportation space and adds a complementary offering to serve its customers’ multimodal transportation and logistics needs. The addition of Choptank is an important strategic milestone toward achieving Hub Group’s goal of over $6 billion of revenue by 2025.

“We are excited to welcome Choptank’s employees, customers and carriers to Hub Group,” said Hub Group Chairman and CEO David Yeager. “This acquisition delivers on our strategy to provide the industry’s premier supply chain solutions, and will advance our position in the growing cold-chain segment.”

The acquisition enhances Hub’s over-the-road refrigerated transportation solutions offering, and complements its growing fleet of 450 refrigerated intermodal containers. Hub Group intends to further invest in its refrigerated transportation offering by purchasing 550 refrigerated intermodal containers in 2022, bringing the size of its fleet to 1,000.

Choptank adds scale to Hub’s brokerage service line, with combined revenue of over $1 billion across dry van, refrigerated and LTL freight expected for 2021. The acquisition is expected to result in numerous complementary cross-selling opportunities for both Hub’s and Choptank’s customer bases. With this transaction, Hub’s non-asset business lines will contribute over 40% of total revenue.

In addition to its expansive carrier network, Choptank’s 400 employees will join Hub Group. The company has developed a best-in-class proprietary technology platform that Hub will leverage to enhance its Brokerage operation.

“Our team is excited to join Hub Group,” said Choptank CEO Geoff Turner. “We share similar values of service, integrity and innovation, which we are excited to bring together to fuel our continued growth. Choptank brings our wealth of industry experience, a strong carrier network, and innovative technology that, when combined with the industry presence and reputation of Hub Group, will unlock value for our customers and move our business forward.”

Cash consideration for the transaction of $130 million was funded by cash on hand. In connection with the acquisition Hub Group granted contingent compensation to the owners and senior management team of Choptank to incentivize their retention and drive continued growth of the business. Choptank expects to generate over $450 million of annual revenue in 2021.

Winston & Strawn LLP served as lead legal counsel to Hub Group on the transaction. Stifel and McAllister, DeTar, Showalter & Walker LLC acted as financial advisor and legal counsel, respectively, to Choptank on the transaction.

October 9, 2021 by Spy Desk

Share

5Metis, an F3 Tech 2021 Accelerator portfolio company, has just raised $10 million from investors in an oversubscribed Series A Preferred Stock financing round. This marks the largest investment deal in the history of the Accelerator program, supported by the Eastern Shore Entrepreneurship Center, a non-profit, and the U.S. Economic Development Administration. 5Metis is a new pure-play discovery company for crop protection and plant health technologies.

“The companies we have invited to this year’s program are more mature than ever before and represent some of the best investment opportunities and talent our industrial partners desire,” said F3 Tech Program Director Chris Hlubb. “It’s the largest amount any company has raised during our program, and we are excited to work with the management team at 5Metis to begin commercializing their technology through partnerships.”

Founded in 2021, 5Metis uses the technology platforms of two leading agricultural technology companies, Boragen Inc. and AgriMetis, LLC to combine boron-based small molecule discovery and synthetic biology for discovering new modes of action for crop protection. Through the accelerator program, F3 Tech will now work with 5Metis to expedite commercial outreach and partnerships for the company.

Headquartered in Research Triangle Park, NC, 5Metis is led by agricultural industry veterans Steve Tuttle, Brian Green and Hannah Webb. Tuttle has held senior positions within Dow AgroSciences and the Dow Chemical Company, including serving as its global business director for the insecticides and fungicide portfolios. Green, a co-founder of AgriMetis – one of the parent legacy company of 5Metis – has led research programs at several chemical companies and Johns Hopkins University. Webb, a microbiologist, manages business development at Boragen, the other parent legacy company of 5Metis.

“There’s need in the market to bring new modes of action to the industry for crop protection and plant health,” Tuttle told WRAL TechWire in an exclusive interview. “If successful, the company will yield solutions for growers and farmers that could boost crop protection and crop health.”

Easton Airport Announces October ‘Walk & Talk’ Open House & Airfield Tour

October 6, 2021 by Spy Desk

Share

Easton Airport is excited to invite the public to a special fall edition of the Walk & Talk airport open house series. The event will offer the community an on-site tour of the community airport with a trek through designated sections of the airfield on October 14, 21, and 28.

Attendees will pre-register and join airport management for the walking tour. The event will be informative and engaging, offering a behind the scenes look at airport operations and the business side of aviation. Airport management expects the event will help the community gain a new perspective of the airport, learn about its history, and see how it has become the “Aviation Gateway to the Eastern Shore” over the years.

“We had a great response from our spring Walk & Talk series and we are excited to invite the community back out this fall,” Easton Airport Manager Micah Risher said. “Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to observe our operations, see aircraft up-close, and ask lots of great questions.”

Spring 2021 Walk & Talk participants learned about the environmental and safety practices on the community airfield.

The tours will begin at 10 a.m. near the picnic area outside the Easton Airport terminal. The group goes beyond the gates and walks a 1-mile loop to the Easton Air Traffic Control Tower and back. During the walk and conversation, management will make stops to look and take photos at hangars, aircraft, and other equipment that are out. The tour will end back at the terminal where photo-ops with the F-104 Starfighter, donated to Easton Airport by Tom Blair, will be available.

The May 2021 series registered over 100 guests for the opportunity to take the behind-the-scenes tour at the airport. The successful Easton Airport Day, held on September 25, saw the largest crowd ever gathered on the airfield for an event, but folks are still eager to learn more about the airfield and see what flying is all about.

“People love being able to walk the tarmac, learn about the airport, and visit with some of our businesses,” Easton Airport Business & Marketing Coordinator Jeff Lankford said. “The walking tour is the best way to learn and explore a unique economic driver for Talbot County.”

Pre-registration for the October Walk & Talk dates is required so airport management can share important information prior to arriving at the airport. No 4-legged friends are permitted on the tour. Comfortable walking shoes, camera, sunscreen, and weather appropriate clothes are the only other things needed to enjoy a morning on the community airfield. Visit www.eastonairport.com to learn more and register for available dates.

Easton Airport (ESN) is a general aviation airport located two miles north of historic downtown Easton, Maryland in Talbot County. Kent County Chamber of Commerce Presents Community Excellence Awards

September 22, 2021 by Spy Desk

Share

The Kent County Chamber of Commerce presented four businesses and nonprofits and one individual with Community Excellence Awards for their outstanding contributions to the community during the past year through service and leadership. The awardees were The Kitchen at the Imperial, Main Street Chestertown, Minary’s Dream Alliance, and Rebuilding Together Kent County. The Person of the Year award was presented to Dr. Gerard S. O’Connor.

“The Chamber is extremely pleased to recognize these four businesses and nonprofits and Dr. O’Connor,” says Bryan Matthews, President of Kent County Chamber of Commerce. “Their commitment to the community makes Kent County the special place that it is.”

The Kitchen at the Imperial was recognized with a Community Excellence Award for their many outstanding contributions to the community—especially feeding the hospital staff during the onset of COVID-19. When the pandemic hit and many were forced to work from home or seek unemployment benefits, our hospital staff diligently reported to work to care for the ill. With few customers to serve, owner and chef Steve Quigg reached out to the hospital and offered to cook and deliver meals for the night shift at the hospital. One meal even included fresh oysters after the Kent Chamber connected Steve with Scott Budden, owner and operator of Orchard Point Oysters. This is just one example of how The Kitchen reinforced the principles it abides by—being a community restaurant.

Nina Fleegle (center), Main Street Chestertown Executive Director, accepts award from Sam Shoge (left), Kent Chamber Executive Director and Bryan Matthews (right), Kent Chamber President.

Main Street Chestertown was recognized for launching four initiatives aimed directly at supporting the shops, merchants, and restaurants being impacted by the pandemic and resulting distribution to customers. The initiatives included launching an online portal for residents and customers to purchase gift certificates from local businesses, creating and posting signage encouraging social distancing, assisting restaurants with setting up street dining outdoors, and building rolling planters to demarcate outdoor dining space and beautify downtown Chestertown.

Minary’s Dream Alliance was recognized for several programs that brought joy and much needed support to several populations in Kent County. From ensuring young children having the ability to enjoy an Easter egg hunt during COVID-19 to preparing meals for first responders, the impact of MDA’s programs was far reaching. Minary’s Dream Alliance’s most notable contribution was rallying an entire community to deliver 200 bags of groceries each week to homebound seniors during the height of the pandemic.

Wayne Rickert (center, holding award), Executive Director of Rebuilding Together Kent County and Vic Pfeiffer (far right), Chairman of Rebuilding Together Kent County, accepts award from Sam Shoge (left), Kent Chamber Executive Director and Bryan Matthews, Kent Chamber President.

Rebuilding Together Kent County was recognized with a Community Excellence Award for the way they touched the lives of many here in Kent County. Rebuilding Together provides critical home repairs to those in need and the organization helped Kent County neighbors by replacing roofs, installing handicap accessible ramps, and providing other repairs that allowed Kent County residents to remain in their homes. These repairs also allowed the residents to maintain equity in their home. Because the equity in one’s home is often the only source of wealth for many, the work Rebuilding Together Kent County does also has the added benefit of preserving housing equity in our community.

The Person of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Gerard (Jerry) S. O’Connor for his outstanding contributions to the Kent County Community for the past 38 years. Dr. O’Connor dedicated his medical career to serving the surgical needs of Kent County residents. In addition to being a medical professional, Dr. O’Connor was extremely active in the community, serving with several community organizations including the Lions Club. Recently, he is most recognized for his dedicated efforts in launching a grassroots movement—Save Our Hospital—to preserve inpatient care at the Chestertown Medical Center. This movement was instrumental in paving the way for the Chestertown Medical Center being designated a Maryland Rural Hospital.
