Olivet Hill Church no longer stands, but it has a significant history in northern Kent County. The building in this undated image, built in 1907, was, according to the Maryland Historic Sites Survey, “among the more complex of the county’s late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century churches.” The church remained in use until 1979 when the ceiling collapsed into the nave, forcing its closure and compelling most of its members to transfer to John Wesley in Sassafras.
To hear more about Olivet Hill, visit the Historical Society at 301 High Street in Chestertown Thursday, October 30 at noon for Lunch & Lore. The guest host will be Galena’s Historic Resource Coordinator, Amber Englebach, who will share the story of The Secret Garden of Olivet Hill, which tells a remarkable story of faith, loss, and rediscovery that continues to unfold just beyond Galena’s town limits, proving that even in forgotten places, history still speaks.
