Maryland Caucus Podcast with Foxwell and Mitchell: Will the State Get the Open Primaries It Wants?

October 15, 2025 by Len Foxwell and Clayton Mitchell 1 Comment

Every Wednesday, Maryland political analysts Len Foxwell and Clayton Mitchell discuss the politics and personalities of the State and region.

This week, Len and Clayton discuss whether former Lieutenant Governor Boyd Rutherford’s lawsuit to create an open primary election could actually change Maryland’s closed primary system. They also share their “hot takes” on all things good and bad in the State.

This video is approximately 16 minutes in length.

For selecting/nominating its candidate, there is NOTHING AMISS with a political party having a primary election that’s closed to anyone who’s not a party member.
    • What is NOT ACCEPTABLE is paying for a closed primary with public, i.e., tax money.
    • If outsiders are not permitted to vote in it, a political party should be required to pay for its own primary.
    • Or pay for a members-only primary via the internet.
    • Or pay for its state or national convention to select its candidate.
